Sun White-Light Tour for 5/14/2013
Something a bit different from me, in a few ways. My 8" Baader film for my C8 ripped, so I had 6" one I used on my dob for outreach. Todays Sun is so spectacular for sunspots, I just decided to pop on that, grab my ImagingSource DMK21.04 camera, and hand guide some video.
AR1745 is gorgeous, with a huge penumbra area. AR1746 was also large and well defined. Add in a lot of smaller groups, and a great view for our closest star!

Watch Ep 75 Hangout - NEAF 2013 Best of the Web, Daves Solar System Record
Although I will unfortunately have to miss NEAF 2013 AGAIN(!) due to personal reasons, that doesn't mean we can speculate on what astronomical equipment will be the talk of the show. I give you my opinion on that, and a general review of what to expect at NEAF 2013 this year.
I’ve been dreaming of a piece of software that could show off the Sun in Hydrogen-Alpha with a monochrome camera, but in color. Well my dreams came true when I found Dave’s Solar System Recorder. I’ll give you a demo of this product, and showcase some of its performance on this episode of At The Eyepiece.
Show notes are now available HERE!

SunDay Global Astronomy Month 2013 Video
The new astronomy club I helped form, the Murfreesboro Astronomy Club, participated in its first event yesterday, and what an event! No, not huge amounts of people, I would estimate maybe 25 or so came out during our 2 hours of solar viewing, but the bigger picture is the fact that we were participating with the world-wide efforts of possibly thousands of amateur astronomers to share the views of the Sun. Part of Global Astronomy Month, SunDay (get it) is a day for amateur astronomers to share the views of our closest star, the Sun.
Weather wise it wasn't to good, we had thin cloud cover for most of the time, permitting still nice white-light views, but washing out most everything in Hydrogen-Alpha. To add, there was quite a bit of wind as well. However, we persisted and eventually there was a decent break in the clouds to show off the Sun with our Coronado SolarMax 60II. We decided to live feed it to a laptop, and use a superb program called Daves Solar Recorder to show the monochrome image via our ImagingSource DMK21.04, but with a twist, since the program permits two feeds of video, one for surface and one for edge details and then it automatically colors if for you! Yeah, its a great outreach tool.
All in all it was a great day, so enjoy the video!
